A Thurston Community College pupil has become the first Suffolk volleyball player to be selected for England’s junior camp since 2007.
Amelia Hadjianastasi, 16, has secured a place in the under-19s’ category and will travel to meet her teammates at the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering this weekend.
It is during this weekend the final squad for the forthcoming season will be selected.
Hadjianastasi plays for Bury Bobcats Volleyball Club and the Suffolk Three ladies team in the adult Essex League and Eastern Region competitions, as well as the Boswells Junior Volleyball Academy in Chelmsford.
With Boswells she regularly trains and competes at national under-16 and under-18 level.
Hadjianastasi — who was recommended for a place at the camp by Boswells coach and ex-Olympian Rachel Laybourne — is the first person from Suffolk to attain this recognition since Jack Watson, who was selected for England juniors in 2007 and went on to captain his country at this level.
Bury Bobcats and many of Suffolk’s other clubs are open to new members of all abilities, aged 14-plus.
The Bobcats train at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre, with their open session on Sundays from 3-4.30pm and their elite session on Fridays from 8-9.30pm.
