Marco Mitev-Will finally got his hands on the Men’s Open Singles trophy as this year’s Bury and West Suffolk Junior Tennis Tournament reached an exciting conclusion.

It was fourth time lucky for the Red Lodge competitor, who had lost in the final three years running, but battled back from a disastrous start in the final against Haverhill’s Josh Dashwood.

The match-hardened Dashwood, who is the regional services manager for LTA East, raced into a 4-0 lead, before Mitev won 12 games in a row to win the match 6-4, 6-0.

The 89th staging of the popular tournament saw spectators at Culford School treated to a number of entertaining finals on Saturday.

Dashwood also went down with partner Tom Marsh in the Men’s Doubles decider, losing to the Culford coach combination of Anthony Orton and Ashley Pepper, although he did record a semi-final victory over father and son duo Gary and Asa Keens.

In the Women’s Open Singles, Haverhill’s Abi Cartwright-Thomas overcame Holbrook’s Sophie Taber in a close-fought final 6-3, 7-6 (5).

The Women’s Doubles final was an equally tight affair, with Bronwyn Keating and Penny Taylor beating Belinda Bell and Helen Stacey in a titanic tie-break 10-7.

Asa Keens gained some consolation by winning the Under-14s Doubles alongside Felixstowe’s Jasper Chase.

Culford’s Luke Watson had another fine tournament, capturing the Under-16s titles against club colleague Sebastian Koci-Edwards, who had to retire with injury when losing 3-0 in the opener.

He also finished runner-up in the Under-18s, going down to Oliver Brax of Red Lodge, and will have been one to watch, along with Mitev-Will, in the Suffolk Men’s Singles in Framlingham this week.

The trophies were presented by tournament president Alastair Passey, with chairman Sue Glasswell thanking referee Rick Gardner, Richard Smith and her hard-working committee of volunteers.

She also gave special thanks to sponsors Glasswell, Topspin Tennis, Culford School, Hughes TV, Ensors, Wildtracks, First Choice Marquees and the Bury Free Press, who gave invaluable support, concluding another highly successful week by looking forward to the 90th anniversary party in 2017.

Glasswell, overseeing this Suffolk LTA Tournament of the Year for a highly commendable 15th year, was highly delighted with the week and said: “We had yet another very successful event with 240 players taking part.

“We’ve had a high level of entries from Paul Hope of Titan Tennis and hosts Culford School, others coming from many other East Anglian clubs.

“There’s been good tennis throughout the week, and we look forward to the 90th anniversary next year.

“Many thanks to the hard-working committee of volunteers, Rick Gardner and Richard Smith.”
