TWO COUNTIES CHAMPIONS
beat Mistley 31
by 265 runs
Mildenhall CC climbed to the top of the Division One table following back-to-back victories over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Having secured a 148-run over Braintree on Saturday, Mildenhall built on that momentum on Monday to ease to an emphatic victory over Mistley.
The visitors invited Mildenhall to bat. Their bowlers were soon on the back foot as Joe Reed and Steve Taylor added 50 in the first 10 overs.
Reed (39) departed when the score had reached 74 before Peter Worthington joined Taylor and made 68 in their partnership of 114.
Ben Shepperson soon joined in making 31 as he and Taylor added a further 50.
Taylor (103) reached a century before he was caught and bowled by Pembroke. Hamzah Ikram (16) and Ziaf Kulasi (34no) added to the onslaught, as Mildenhall closed on 296-5.
In Mistley’s reply, the Mildenhall attack wreaked havoc. Two stunning catches by Karl Morrison and a ricochet catch for Shepperson along with Worthington claiming three wickets in one over for no runs, the visitors were reduced to 26-5.
Rain then swept in and ended proceeding for over two hours. Eventually the umpires allowed play to resume at 7.45pm.
Jon Allen soon struck taking two wickets in two overs. Amazingly Mistley then lost a seventh wicket on the same score when J Goff was caught behind by Ed Finnis off Reed.
Two overs later and without addition, Reed had Johnson caught by Worthington. Mildenhall completed a remarkable win four overs later when Reed induced an edge by Pembroke and Worthington held on to the catch. Mistley had been bowled out for 31.
The devastating bowling of Worthington (3-0), Jon Allen (2-0) and Joe Reed (3-3) capped off a fine bank holiday for Mildenbhall to see them sitting pretty at the summit of the table.
Mildenhall host Coggeshall on Saturday (1pm).
