Mildenhall bounce back from defeat

Mildenhall Town 1

Dereham Town 3

League leaders Dereham gained a victory but only after being pushed all the way.

The opening stages were even before a sharp break gave Dereham the lead after 23 minutes, Adam Smith slotting clinically past Josh Pope in the home goal.

Hall equalised after 11 minutes when skipper Dave Werthmann netted his first of the campaign, flicking in David Cooper’s corner at the near post.

A handball decision against Cooper was disputed, but there was no arguing with Tuttle’s pinpoint free kick into the top corner from 20 yards.

As Hall pushed for a leveller, the visitors picked them off on the break and Bammant squared for Ryan Hawkins to seal the points.

Ely City 1

Mildenhall Town 2

Mildenhall’s gutsy performance earned a derby victory at Ely.

Their best chances fell to James Paterson, who lobbed wide after being sent clear by Darryl Coakley’s incisive pass, and Andrew Wood saw his effort cleared off the line by Sam Parkinson.

Three minutes after the break, Wood was not to be denied. Running onto a pass from Kris Thomas, he saw goalkeeper Lee Pacey moving out to anticipate a square ball and fired in clinically at the near post.

The lead lasted only seven minutes, Ben Lawrence headed a corner across goal for Adam Murray to nod in.

Two minutes later, Town were back in front after a well worked team goal.

Wood turned on the halfway line and sent Thomas down the right, and the young forward picked out Allicion Blake to slot home the goal his performance deserved.
