Matt’ll do nicely after Ipswich sprint

Fifteen triathletes from West Suffolk Wheelers competed at the Ipswich club’s sprint distance event, held at Culford School on Sunday.

Involving a 300m pool swim, a 21km bike section and ending with a 4km run, the Wheelers contingent put in some impressive displays.

Matt Shingleton completed the swim section in 4.19, 32.58 for the bike section and 13.51 for the run, placing him first overall in 51.08.

Angela Joiner Handy posted 6.43, 38.41 and 15.20 for her sections seeing her home as third lady (1.00.44) and first lady overall in the two-event series.

Other results were: Malcolm MacFarlane (28th/1.00.17), Chris Brownhill (31st/1.00.55), Ross McKenzie , (35th/1.01.46), Mark Verzijl (44th/1.03.00), Myles Taylor (47th/1.03.09), Helen Samuel (61st/1.04.43), Andy Bonser (65th/1.04.57), Hayley Brewis (73rd/1.05.45), David Leaver (95th/1.08.27), Paul Sawyer (96th/1.08.40), Simon Kitching (101st/1.10.04), Steve Bull (130th/1.14.32), Colleen Greenwood (160th/1.27.23).

West Suffolk Wheelers member Paul Rooke braved the conditions on Sunday at the East District Cycling Association’s 100-mile time trial.

Held over the B100/4 course at Besthorpe, in Norfolk, Rooke rode a commanding 4 hours 20 minutes 4 seconds.

Rooke was also in action at the recent Team Cambridge CC 10-mile open time trial held on the F2D/10 course (Hardwick/Caxton/Madingly), stopping the clock in 22.32, with team-mates Ron Back (26.01) John Coles (26.04), and Jim Greenwood (27.03) riding well behind him.
