Marketmen must pick up something at the weekend

KEY GAME: Needham assistant Richard Wilkins
KEY GAME: Needham assistant Richard Wilkins

Assistant manager Richard Wilkins has conceded failure to take anything from tomorrow’s home clash with second-placed Havant & Waterlooville could be terminal to Needham Market’s play-off hopes.

The Marketmen sit third in the table after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat (Ingram, 79) at relegation-threatened Hendon, but after two defeats and a draw in recent weeks, the chasing pack are closing in.

And with some of those sides also having games in hand, Wilkins has admitted his team cannot afford to lose at Bloomfields (3pm).

“It is a massive game and one we need to be taking at least a point from,” he said.

“If we lose, the confidence will be fragile and it is going to be tough.

“Our form has been patchy and some players have been missing, but we need to get over that.

“A win will build confidence and should bring some momentum.

“There are 18 points left to play for and we probably need 13, maybe even 15.”

Colchester United’s Callum Harrison has rejoined the club until the end of the season, while Cameron Norman is having a trial with a Scandinavian club.
