League overhaul gives a shot at promotion for Thurston

PROMOTION CHANCE: Thurston (scoring a try last year) can still go up this season
PROMOTION CHANCE: Thurston (scoring a try last year) can still go up this season

Thurston Rangers Rugby Club will go into tomorrow’s home leg of their local derby with league leaders Thetford (3pm) a whooping 35 points adrift of them — but suddenly in with a shout of joining them at a higher level next season.

A restructuring of the rugby pyramid by the RFU ahead of next season will now see the top six teams in the Eastern Counties Greene King League Division One table (from 12 in total) promoted to London League Three.

London League Three North East is set to be split into two more localised leagues — one incorporating Essex sides, such as Ilford and Basildon and the other Eastern Counties members, such as Stowmarket and Ely — to reduce travelling.

Thurston are currently in seventh place and must overturn a nine-point gap (two bonus-point wins) in their last three games to leapfrog Wisbech into sixth place.

The Eastern Counties League is yet to announce how the changes will affect their level next season.
