A Bury St Edmunds school teacher is continuing to inspire her pupils to reach for the stars in their chosen sport after being called up for the England Masters hockey squad for the eighth consecutive year, writes Russell Claydon.

Katie Bedford, South Lee School’s games teacher, is set to help England Women Over-50s defend their Home Nations International title against Ireland, Scotland and Wales in Dublin in June.

The 52-year-old’s busy summer of sport is set to climax at the European Championships in Holland.

Bedford has great memories with her country already, but hopes to forge new ones as well as her story inspiring her pupils.

“My most memorable experiences were playing in the inaugural intercontinental Masters tournament played on the beautiful Gold Coast of Australia, however, this was a tough tournament and early in the life of lady masters hockey, which is only 10-years-old,” said the player who has amassed more than 40 caps.

“My greatest achievement was with the Over-50’s squad when we travelled to Holland and became World Champions in 2014 by beating Australia in the final.”

Director of sport at South Lee School, Rhys Loveday (ex-Saracens) feels Bedford’s enthusiasm and talent for the sport has had a significant impact on the pupils which was recently bourne out when their under-11s hockey side came third in the Suffolk County Championships at Framlingham College.

n The school held an open day on Saturday but anyone interested in finding out more contact their registrar, Mrs Ronge, on 01284 754654 or visit www.southlee.co.uk
