PACESETTER: Richard Denny leading Mike Steele and James Denny in the first race

A few hardy members arrived at Lackford Lake, on Sunday, for St Edmundsbury Sailing and Canoeing Association’s end of early season series.

Competitors and spectators were rewarded with some exhilarating sailing in a fresh, southerly breeze and some spectacular capsizes.

In the first race, Mike Steele finished first with James Denny second and Richard Denny a close third.

Leslie Denny, with son Sam, 10, put up a sterling performance in the club’s Vibe, before succumbing to a particularly vicious gust.

In the second race, Steele made the most of his few extra kilos and led around the course. James Denny was forced to retire at the end of the first lap, leaving Richard Denny to take a well deserved second.

Six new members enjoyed their baptism to sailing as they undertook their RYA beginners’ course, in three heavily reefed Wanderer dinghies.

Preparations are now well in hand for the club’s third Antigua Sailing Day Regatta, on Sunday, April 26, sponsored by the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority. More than 20 dinghies are now entered, with a strong contingent from the Newmarket and Mildenhall Sea Cadets. Details at www.westsufolksailing.org.uk
