Gilding causes a shock to get to UK Open semi-finals

Walsham-le-Willows Sports Club player Andrew Gilding masterminded a dream run at the Coral UK Open, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

The 44-year-old enjoyed a memorable tournament at the Butlins Minehead Resort, beating established players such as Jelle Klassen, Kevin Painter and James Wade, before overcoming Mensur Suljovic in his first ever televised quarter-final.

That saw the ace nicknamed ‘Goldfinger’ go head-to-head with world number one Michael van Gerwen for a place in the final.

But in what proved a valiant effort, Gilding could not quite topple the Dutchman, who sealed a hard fought 10-8 victory, before going on to eventually win the title.
