Debutant defender David Femiola headed home a second-half equaliser as Bury Town ended a run of six consecutive defeats by securing a 1-1 draw at fellow Ryman League Premier Division strugglers AFC Hornchurch on Saturday.

The Blues, who also had Jordan Patrick in their starting XI for the first time this season, fell behind in the first minute when Reece Beckles-Richards broke through.

That scoreline remained until 20 minutes from time when former Billericay Town defender Femiola met Joe Whight’s corner at the back post to power his header home.

Needham Market’s FA Cup adventure came to an end in the third qualifying round at home to Witham Town.

The Marketmen led at the interval thanks to Kem Izzet’s penalty, but Witham Town turned the match around thanks to strikes from Tom Waight and James Stevens.

In the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division, Mildenhall Town thrashed Wivenhoe Town 5-1, Walsham-le-Willows won 3-2 at Ipswich Wanderers and Thetford Town drew 3-3 with Gorleston.

In the First Division, Needham Market Reserves lost 5-1 at Saffron Walden Town and Team Bury beat Stowmarket Town 2-1.

In rugby union, Bury St Edmunds moved up to second in National Three London and South East after a 47-17 victory at London Irish Wild Geese.

Stowmarket lost 48-19 at Beccles in London Three North East, while Thetford saw off Mersea Island in Eastern Counties Division One and Thurston lost 12-5 at Wisbech.
