Weekend round-up: Bury Town out of FA Trophy while town’s rugby side end losing run

Bury Town were comprehensively knocked out of the FA Trophy 3-0 by Skrill Conference South side Eastleigh at Ram Meadow on Saturday.

The Spitfires were ahead after only 11 minutes with former Football League midfielder Ben Strevans then adding his second before the break.

Despite Bury’s bright opening to the second half, a third goal followed within 11 minutes of the restart as substitute Craig McAllister celebrated the birth of the child in the early hours of the morning with a headed goal.

The Blues had several chances to score themselves but Tom Bullard and Billy Clarke were thwarted by excellent saves by Ross Flitney.

In the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division Mildenhall Town drew 2-2 at FC Clacton and Thetford Town lost 4-1 to league leaders Hadleigh United.

In the First Division Team Bury won 1-0 at Cornard United.

Gary Hooper’s solitary strike enabled Norwich City to overcome Crystal Palace in the Barclays Premier League, while Ipswich Town won 1-0 at Charlton Athletic in the Sky Bet Championship thanks to Tommy Smith’s early goal.

In the rugby Bury St Edmunds ended their four-game losing run with a 36-32 win over CS Rugby 1863 at the Haberden.

Bury were outscored in tries 5-3 but David Ormrod slotted over four penalties, with the home side having led 22-7 at half-time.
