Bury St Edmunds slipped to a 30-29 defeat at Westcombe Park in rugby’s SSE National Three London and South East.

A controversial late penalty — given against Tanimo Samoa, resulting in the centre being sinbinned — handed the hosts victory.

Tries from Chris Snelling, Logan Dodds, Dan Garrard, Samoa and Sam Bixby had Bury 29-13 ahead at one stage, but Park hit back to gain victory.

In London Two North East, Stowmarket were beaten 28-14 at Chelmsford, while there were victories for Thurston and Thetford, but a defeat for Mildenhall and Red Lodge Eagles in Greene King IPA Eastern Counties League Division Two.

In football, Ryman League matches involving Bury Town and Needham Market were off, with both next in action in the Suffolk Premier Cup semi-finals during midweek.

In the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division, Walsham-le-Willows drew 1-1 at home to Newmarket Town, while Thetford Town lost 2-0 to Brightlingsea Regent.

In the First Division, Stowmarket Town trounced Needham Market Reserves 6-2 thanks to goals from Remell Davis (two), Ben Garnham, Josh Merritt, Wayne Proctor and Lamarr Bennett-Grant.

In the Barclays Premier League, Norwich City were thumped 4-1 at Aston Villa, while Daryl Murphy fired Ipswich Town to their first win in a month as they overcame Birmingham City 1-0 in the Sky Bet Championship.
