Full debutant Alfie Bedingham and David Lampshire were on target in a 2-1 victory over Metropolitan Police to help Bury Town record their first win at Ram Meadow since October 25.
After a goalless first half, eighteen-year-old Bedingham kept his cool to put Bury ahead before Jake Reid got beyong the backline and put a half-volley past Alex Archer.
But a goalkeeping error at the other end ensured the points were all Bury’s, as Lampshire was rewarded for constant harrying when on-loan Reading goalkeeper Joe Tupper sliced a backpass, presenting him with the ball to roll into the net.
Needham Market maintained their five-point advantage at the top of Ryman League Division One North with a 3-1 win at strugglers Cray Wanderers thanks to three first-half goals; a brace from Micheal Brothers and one for Sam Newson.
In the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division, Mildenhall Town triumphed 2-0 at home to Gorleston with a double from David Cooper, while Thetford Town lost 2-0 at home to league leaders Norwich United.
A depleted Team Bury, with a handful of their players called up to play for Bury Town, earned a good point in a 1-1 draw at Halstead Town in the First Division, while Needham Market Reserves had drawn 0-0 at home to Debenham LC on the Friday evening. Stowmarket Town were without a game.
Ipswich Town’s realistic hopes of a top two spot evaporated in the early kick-off on Tesside as they went down to a 4-1 defeat at new league leaders Middlesbrough.
Daryl Muprhy had equalised Daniel Ayala’s early header before Albert Adomah put them 2-1 ahead going into half-time and on-loan Chelsea player Patrick Bamford hit two in the second half.
Brentford’s loss later in the day seeing the Tractor Boys remain a point off the play-offs in seventh.
Norwich City remain fifth after sharing a 1-1 home draw with fellow promotion chasers Derby County.
Cameron Jerome had put the Canaries ahead in the first half following an eye-catching move, but goalkeeper John Ruddy fumbled a corner into his own net shortly after the hour mark.
