Needham Market hotshot Sam Newson is determined to maintain his blistering run of goal scoring from and help fire the Marketmen to promotion.

The frontman bagged his 11th goal from just the club’s last six games as his brace helped guide the Bloomfields-based outfit to a 4-1 success over Brightlingsea Regent on Tuesday night, with Luke Ingram and George Clarke also on target.

And after enduring an injury-plagued campaign last season, in which he was limited to just 15 goals, Newson will be looking to edge closer to surpassing that total away at Romford tomorrow (3pm) before a trip to Leiston in the first round of the Robert Dyas Isthmian League Cup on Tuesday (7.45pm).

“I had a lot of injuries last season and that wore away my confidence a bit and goals became a major issue for the team,” he said.

“But I was really pleased with pre-season and everything seems settled now, chances are coming my way and I’m scoring.

“The only target I have is to score more than last season and I’m already close to that so I’m happy.”

The marksman’s goals have helped guide Needham to second in the Ryman League Division One North table, sitting only behind leaders Harlow Town by a single goal difference.

And with the season getting off to a bright start Newson is confident the club can finally gain promotion in what is his fifth season at Bloomfields.

“All any of us want at the club is to gain promotion and be playing in the next league above,” he added.

“Having only brought in one senior player in the summer and pretty much having the same squad as last season has been massively important and I think we all know we should be targeting promotion.

“We look strong throughout the squad and have a lot of options which is great.

n Mark Morsley’s side will host the side who beat them in the Ryman League Division One North play-off semi-finals last season, Witham Town, in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup on October 11 (3pm).
