Needham Market striker Sam Newson is determined not to let his latest injury setback hamper his season as he aims to fire the club to promotion.

The Marketmen’s leading scorer with eight goals from 15 games, saw a promising display against Cambridge United in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round cut short on Saturday after falling awkwardly attempting to block a clearance.

Despite having his enjoyment of the momentous occasion dampened slightly, Newson is confident he will be back sooner than anticipated.

“The physio confirmed there was some damage to my ankle ligaments and we’re hoping I will only be out for four weeks,” he said.

“It is not ideal but I’m confident of getting back quicker than that and being stronger than ever.

“Obviously I was disappointed to have to go off but it was a great occasion and I’m just pleased to have been able to play a part in it.”

Turning his attention back to the league campaign, Newson has backed his side to take positives from Saturday’s defeat and continue their quest for promotion from Ryman League Division One North, starting with a trip to Harlow Town tomorrow (3pm).

“We can take a lot of heart from our performance in the cup and hopefully we can transfer that form into the league now,” he added.

“We have had a good start to the season and we need to get back to putting points on the board and push for promotion.”
