Walsham-le-Willows secured a timely victory after overcoming Brantham Athletic in a 3-1 success.
On a day that saw the Willows handing out free eggs to fans at Summer Road as part of an initiative for National Non-League Day, Brantham’s Matt Trauts was left with egg on his face in the 23rd minute after getting in a flap and inadvertently turning Andrew Woods’ cross into his own net.
However, the centre half made amends three minutes later as he was on hand to prod home Ollie Mann’s drilled ball across the goal mouth to level before the interval.
But the home side regained momentum after the break and after Wood spurned a number of chances, including hitting the bar, the striker put the home side back in front after racing on to substitute Tom Driscoll’s ball before rounding the Brantham goalkeeper and sliding the ball into the net.
But while the Willows’ fans may have been forgiven for not counting their chickens after a shaky start to the season, Sam Peters put any doubts to bed after curling a superb free kick over the wall and into the bottom right corner with just minutes remaining to seal a welcome three points.
The result leaves Walsham 14th in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division following just their second win of the season.
