Leatherhead 0 Bury Town 5
FOLLOWING an uneventful first 40 minutes, Bury put on a five-star performance to earn a comprehensive victory over lowly Leatherhead.
The hosts started well and looked dangerous in attack with Ryan Dolby causing problems on the left flank.
Neither keeper was seriously tested, but Leatherhead had control of midfield and little was seen of the Bury attack in the first half hour.
John Sands and Sam Reed forced good saves from home keeper Chico Ramos.
And two goals in three minutes virtually decided the outcome.
On 41 minutes, Lee Reed had a fierce drive parried by the keeper, but Sands followed up to crash the rebound into the net to give Bury the lead.
Two minutes later, they doubled their advantage when a neat passing move on the left was finished off by Lee Smith to leave the hosts looking shell-shocked at half-time.
Bury went on the attack from the kick-off in the second half and were awarded what appeared to be a soft penalty when Sands went down in the box after 47 minutes. Justice was seen to be done as Sands blasted the spot-kick well over the bar.
Bury were not to be denied and went further ahead on 54 minutes when a goalkeeping error allowed Sam Nunn’s header from Sam Reed’s free-kick to creep in at the far post.
Ten minutes later, Smith rounded off a fine four man move with a great strike from outside the box.
The scoring was completed after 77 minutes as Smith celebrated a hat-trick with a deft backheel following a great run and cross from Connor Hall.
Leatherhead fought hard to score a consolation and Thomas Brunt and Ryan Thomas both went close, but the Bury defence held firm to complete an outstanding victory that sees them climb into the play-off places.
