Stowmarket Town 1 Thetford Town 4
MATT Dixon took his season’s tally to 20 league goals with a hat-trick in Thetford Town’s win at Stowmarket Town on Saturday.
The Brecklanders’ striker netted four last week against Cornard United and proved equally ruthless against the side level on points with Cornard at the foot of the table.
It took Dixon just four minutes to get on the scoresheet, tapping home Bruno Tavares’ low driven cross after the Portuguese winger had latched on to Ian Fancett’s long goal-kick.
Stow goalkeeper Carl Pearson had to be alert to deny Tavares, who was having a field day, on three occasions.
The visitors finally doubled their advantage when Dixon was brought down by Craig Brown, but the former Diss forward needed three attempts to force the ball home after Pearson blocked the spot-kick and Dixon’s intial follow-up.
Stow improved after half-time and Kieren Joseph missed a glorious chance to put the Gold and Blacks back in the game.
But it would be Dixon’s afternoon as he claimed the match ball by swivelling to fire home from 18 yards.
Stowmarket did give the score some respectability when Dean Cooper charged up from the back to plant a thumping header beyond Fancett, but James Graham headed past his own keeper a minute from time to end another sorry afternoon for Stow and help Thetford back into the division’s promotion places.
