Carver heads Suffolk into national quarter-finals

Needham Market’s Jon Carver scored the only goal as Suffolk Under-18s dug deep to defeat their counterparts from Essex and reach the quarter-finals of Football Association’s County Youth Cup.

Carver headed home in the 28th minute from Needham teammate Harrison Ford’s free-kick in Saturday’s third-round tie, which was played at AFC Hornchurch.

Fellow Marketmen youngsters Ben Hope and Brendon Heath were also involved, along with Bury Town’s Tevan Allen.

n Bury Town duo Fabian Horricks and Matt Skevington have been selected for Suffolk Under-16s to face Bedfordshire at Haverhill Rovers’ New Croft ground in the East Anglian Counties Championship on Sunday (2pm).

n Walsham-le-Willows Under-12s moved to top of Division One with a comfortable 8-1 victory at Abbey Saints Under-12s, thanks to goals from Alex Rice (three), Will Egglestone (three), Josh Tysoe and Ellis Girling.

n Lawshall and Cockfield Girls Under-16s defeated Framlingham 8-0 thanks to braces from Sophie Pink, Sophie Jeffrey and Olivia Rush, as well a strike each for Suleika Horrocks and Fran Cole.

n Stowmarket Town Wasps Under-13s are looking for additional players to join their team in the Ipswich and Suffolk Youth League.

n The World Cup-themed KBB Suffolk FA Grassroots festival — featuring teams from across the county — will be held on May 24 and 25 next year at Gainsborough Sports Centre in Ipswich.

Around 2,000 people, including 800 players, attended this year’s festival, but double that number is expected to be involved next year.
