BURY Town lost valuable ground in the Ryman League Premier Division promotion race after a disappointing 2-1 defeat away to mid-table Harrow Borough on Saturday.

In contrast Needham Market closed the gap on leaders Grays Athletic to just two points in the race for promotion in the Ryman League Division One North table after an emphatic 4-1 victory over high flying Tilbury at Bloomfields. Danny Thrower, Sam Newson, Duane Wright and Danny Bloomfield were all on target to move the Marketmen up to second place.

In the Ridgeons League First Division Stowmarket Town have appointed Shane Austin as their manager, replacing Steve Jay, who left the club by mutual consent. Austin takes charge with the club at the wrong end of the table but will be encouraged by back-to-back impressive league victories in the last two weeks. The Gold and Blacks have lifted themselves from the foot of the table, following up a 4-0 win over Brightlingsea Regent with another strong display at home, beating Fakenham Town 5-0 on Saturday.

In the rugby, Bury St Edmunds suffered their first defeat in eight games, losing 14-12 on their travels away to Ruislip on Saturday to drop to fourth in the London One North Division.
