Billericay Town 4 Bury Town 4
by Brian Wadsworth at New Lodge
BURY had to be content with a share of the spoils after a pulsating game during which both sides held the lead twice.
The first chance of the game fell to the hosts on five minutes when Bury lost possession and Marcus Garnham made a good block from Dave Knight.
Two minutes later, Bury took the lead when Sam Reed beat the offside trap and his low cross was bundled in at the far post by Lee Reed
Nick Morgan made a good save at the feet of Steve Smith from another Sam Reed low cross, and then saved again as Sam Reed burst through on goal.
At the other end, Garnham saved well at the feet of Sam Berry as Billericay came into the game. It was no surprise when they equalised on 27 minutes with a deflected free-kick by Berry.
Billericay took the lead on 37 minutes when Knight finished off a sweeping move by the hosts.
After Kieran Leabon had volleyed narrowly wide, Bury got back on terms in the final minute of the half when Sam Reed’s cross shot was pushed away by the keeper, but the ball fell to Steve Smith, who fired home.
In an even start to the second half, Morgan saved from a Lee Smith free-kick, and from Leabon and at the other end, Garnham saved from Knight before Jay May shot wide from 10 yards.
Bury regained the lead on the hour when Leabon followed up to net after Sam Reed’s effort had been cleared off the line.
The game turned on its head again as Billericay replied with two goals in six minutes. First Knight was allowed to get on to the end of a long through ball to lob Garnham before Paul Samakula fired home after Garnham had parried a shot from Jay May.
With 10 minutes remaining, parity was again restored as Sam Reed slotted home after Lee Reed’s shot had been blocked.
As both sides looked for a winner, the hosts went closest when only a great goalline clearance by Sam Nunn denied Knight a goal.
