Bury St Edmunds’ young goalkeeper Nick Pope is set to stand in the way of his former club, Ipswich Town, pushing on in their promotion quest at Charlton Athletic on Saturday (12.15pm).

The former Bury Town and West Suffolk College graduate is enjoying a run in the first-team after Republic of Ireland international Stephen Henderson has been sidelined with injury.

And with the 22-year-old Henderson having been confirmed as not fit enough to make Saturday’s squad, combined with the former Soham resident’s standout performance in the 0-0 draw at Millwall last week, Pope is set to keep the jersey for the visit of the side he was with until being released at 16.

At Charlton’s press conference ahead of the Championship game, which will be televised on SKY (12.15pm), Addicks boss Bob Peeters confirmed Henderson will be absent on Saturday and Pope is likely to play.

“I thought he was one of our best players against Millwall,” he said.

Ipswich have confirmed around 2,300 tickets have been sold for the travelling Blue-and-White Army, who will be hoping to build on last week’s pleasing 2-2 draw at in-form top four side AFC Bournemouth.

Mick McCarthy’s men are currently fourth in the table, with three points able to move them up to second ahead of the 3pm kick-offs, while Pope’s Charlton have been the surprise package so far this season, currently residing in ninth place.
