The Suffolk Over 50s Home Counties Championship cricket team completed a remarkable double at Harrow St Mary Cricket Club.

They defeated Essex by 54 runs in the play-off final, to add to the achievement of finishing top of the league earlier in the month.

Suffolk were inserted on a green looking wicket and, despite losing a couple of early wickets, recovered admirably to post 271-7 in their allocated 45 overs.

This was thanks mainly to a ton from ex-Suffolk Minor Counties skipper Phil Caley and 67 from Bill Byford of Long Melford CC but consistent runs were scored throughout.

Although the wicket eased during the day there was always something in it for the bowlers but it still needed an outstanding bowling and fielding performance to win the day.

Woolpit’s Jimmy Allan claimed three of the Essex wickets in a memorable finale for the home counties championship team.
