Double delight for Russell as he strikes gold at Championships

Charlie Russell struck double gold for Mildenhall Sharks Swimming Club at the East Region Open Water Championships.

Russell, who competed in the 3,000 metres, was victorious in both the East Region Men’s 25-29 and Suffolk Men’s 25 and over age groups.

His feat was made even more impressive given the fact it was the first time he had competed over the distance.

There was more success for the club in the 800m novice event, which saw six of the Sharks’ 12-strong team in action. Ffion Lewis-Dimmock, Jay Carter, Lucy Ransley, Sam Buckles, Sasha Welbourn and Sophie Almond all took part.

Lewis-Dimmock added to Russell’s earlier success by taking gold in the 13-14 age group.

Mildenhall were also well represented in the 1500m races, with five club members taking to the water.

Dan Zenobia, Gemma Welbourn, Jeannie Morley, Jemma Garry and Rob Garry all swam well, with Morley claiming gold in the East Region Women’s 50-59 age group and silver in the Suffolk Women’s 25 and over age group. Garry bagged bronze in the East Region Men’s 50-59 age group and silver in the Suffolk Men’s 25 and over age group. Zenobia also took gold in the East Region Men’s 30-34 group.
