Differing fortunes for duo at Silverstone
It proved a homecoming of mixed fortunes for two Suffolk racers as they battled it out in the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup in front of a patriotic home crowd at the British Grand Prix.
Racing just hours before Lewis Hamilton swept to victory in the F1 British Grand Prix, former West Suffolk College pupil Ben Barker and Josh Webster, who lives in Mickfield near Stowmarket, were on the hallowed tarmac of Silverstone among a 30-strong field but both left frustrated for different reasons.
Momo-Megatron driver Barker came agonisingly close to getting on the podium but his chances were dashed by contact from another driver as he was forced to settle for a fourth place finish, leaving him fifth in the overall series standings.
But before resuming his Supercup campaign the 24-year-old will be back in Porsche Carrera Cup Germany action at Zandvoort in Holland this weekend.
Meanwhile, Webster was involved in one of the standout moments of the 13-lap race as he battled for ninth place against IDL Racing’s Tom Sharp and Redline Racing’s Dan Cammish.
The trio were engulfed in a nose-to-tail fight until Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholar, Webster, who started from 17th, span after an incident at Stowe, and could only recover enough to secure a 17th place finish.
