Debuts to remember

A tremendous day of high end cycle racing was on display when the Ixworth Cycle Races hosted by West Suffolk Wheelers and Triathlon Club rolled back into the west Suffolk village.

Superb criterium racing weather coupled with the committed, and furiously paced, riders made for a spectacular day’s entertainment for the bumper bank holiday crowd.

Stand out race of the day for the host club saw debutant Wheeler Tom Smith emerge victorious in a fast-paced fourth category race.

Taking the front wheel from the off, Smith rode in his trademark aggressive style in the 40 minute race, taking in successive loops of the punishing 800m course.

Holding off tough competition, Smith crowned his first attempt in this category with a superb first place.

On a good day for the club’s fourth category racers, club-mate Karl Proctor raced in for ninth.

Meanwhile, Mandy Bunn will be pleased with her debut in the first, of what looks to be many, stand-alone women’s race notable for attracting some top end women’s teams, including race winner Sophie Wright of Norfolk club Strada Sport and second place Tanya Griffiths of professional elite women’s race team VeloStarley Primal.

Also enjoying their day in the sun in the residents’ race were the eventual winner, Paul Vickers, as well as Matt Shotbolt and Kim Bonnelykke.
