Culford student claims national title

Harry Wendelken has been crowned Winter National Tour Under-14 tennis champion.

The LTA-staged event, which was hosted at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, is the top level of winter competition for juniors in Great Britain.

The tennis scholar at Culford School stormed through the rounds to become champion, beating Alexander Maggs in the final 6-1 4-6 6-2.

The 14-year-old will now begin the journey to improve his ITF Under-18 ranking, with his first major events to be played in Nottingham this Easter.

n Meanwhile, Culford was celebrating recently as they scooped seven gongs at the Suffolk LTA Awards evening.

A varity of accolades were won, both on individual and team levels.

At the end of last year, Culford School’s Year 10 Boys team were crowned National Tennis Champions, ranking Culford as one of the top three schools nationwide for boys’ tennis and as one of the top five for girls by the LTA.

n Millie-Mae Matthews, who is a Year 8 pupil at Culford Prep School, was invited by the LTA to attend a Davis Cup training day at Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena.

As well as watching the squad train, she also got to meet two-time Grand Slam winner and Olympic champion Andy Murray.
