Controversial disqualification for Pennock

Suffolk owner-trainer Andrew Pennock is considering an appeal after Jonjoela was controversially disqualified from first place in the Restricted Race in the Grafton Hunt Point-to-Point meeting at Whitfield, near Brackley on Sunday.

Timworth Green-based Pennock’s six-year-old mare, ridden by Evan David, jumped across Ballyfore Cross at the last fence in the race sponsored by Beachborough School.

But Katy Lyons’s mount, owned and trained by Tim Underwood at Beedon, near Newbury, rallied to such good effect that he appeared to take the lead on the run-in only for David to get Jonjoela up in the final strides and win by a head.

However, the placings were reversed following a stewards’ enquiry, with the officials ruling that although they deemed the interference at the last was accidental, as there was only a head between the pair at the line it had affected the result.

Pennock said: “I didn’t see any reason to reverse it in real time, and I would say the initial reaction is normally the correct one.

“I am going to try and appeal. I just need to get the video evidence. I am disappointed.”

Lyons, who was fined £75 for using her whip more than the permitted number of times, was confident she would have been first past the post, but for the interference.

“Galloping to the last I had a brilliant stride and would have won by a length or a length-and-a-half,” said the rider from Lockinge, near Wantage.

A delay in announcing the stewards’ enquiry caused consternation among the bookmakers - some of whom ended up paying out on both horses.
