Clare’s England chance

Teenage swimming ace Thomas Clare will this weekend represent England in the International Standard Energy Cup at Lignano Sabbiadoro in Italy.

Clare has been selected to swim the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke events in the Youth Section and also the backstroke leg in the Youth Medley Relay.

The youngster, known as TC in the pool, is looking forward to his first major event on the international stage.

Clare, a Year 9 student from Thurston Community College, said: “It means I will miss this year’s East Region Championships as they are at the same time, which is a shame as I won’t have the chance to defend my title from last year.

“But it’s not every day that you get the amazing opportunity to say that you’ve swum for your country”

Clare was due to fly out yesterday, giving him a day to train with the team and acclimatise.

The International Standard Energy Cup is a competition between England, France, Italy and Russia. This year will also serve as a qualifying event for the Rio Olympics so competition is likely to be fierce.
