Chenery confident of replacing Cemal’s goals
Ben Chenery believes Bury Town fans should keep faith he will be able to locate and polish up another goalscoring gem, following the exit of top marksman Cemal Ramadan.
The ex-Ipswich Town Under-18s player finished the campaign as the Bostik League North Division’s second top goalscorer with 27 (34 in 53 all comps), despite Bury finishing ninth in the table.
Higher-league Leiston, who beat Chenery’s side in the Suffolk Premier Cup final, announced Ramadan’s transfer over the weekend.
But while he is disappointed to lose a player who looks set to be picking up several trophies at the all-welcome Presentation Evening at Ram Meadow tomorrow evening (7.30pm) Bury boss Chenery believes it should be seen as a feather in their cap.
“Cemal was someone who did not have hardly any clubs looking at him last summer and needed an opportunity. I knew what he could deliver, if he got his head right and was fit,” said Chenery.
“I worked hard with him, along with my coaching staff, and he fully deserves his opportunity at Leiston and he is a good lad who I hope goes on to improve as he has good potential.
“It was inevitable teams were going to come knocking when he scored 30-plus goals.
“We are very proud other football clubs are interested in our players as it means we are doing something right.”
He added: “We are looking for strikers, of course we are, but this time of year is notoriously difficult as people are throwing big money at players.
“But I am confident I will always get a squad together that is competitive. He is just one player, and I do not mean that disrespectfully, we will keep searching, like we did last year when we lost Josh Mayhew.”
* The Blues have already announced four pre-season friendlies, away to lower league sides Newmarket Town (July 10), Hadleigh United (July 17) and Long Melford (July 21) as well as a higher-league test at home to AFC Hornchurch (August 4).
