Chenery aims for FA Trophy progression

Ben Chenery knows how good it feels to lift the FA Trophy - and he would love his Bury Town squad to enjoy the same experience.

The Blues manager scored the only goal of the game as Canvey Island beat Forest Green Rovers to win non-league’s premier knockout competition at Villa Park in 2001.

He was also part of the side which returned to Birmingham in 2004, only to be beaten 3-2 by Hednesford Town.

“I know what a great feeling it can be to do well in the Trophy, I’ve got a winner’s and runner-up medal,” Chenery said.

“But the lads are probably fed up of hearing me talk about that.”

Town midfielder John Kennedy also has a winner’s medal, as he was Chenery’s teammate in that successful season, but how would the manager feel if the rest of the squad also had a medal to wear around their necks?

“It’d be perfect,” he added.

But if Bury are to go all they way, first they have to overcome Ryman Premier leaders Dulwich Hamlet at Ram Meadow tomorrow (Saturday - 3pm).

The two sides were league rivals last season, and Chenery knows the South London club will offer stiff competition.

“They’re a good footballing team,” he said.

“We can expect a good atmosphere and the lads will be looking to progress.

“We’re at home and the underdogs, but it’s 11 v 11 and we have to concentrate on playing our game.”

Bury travel to face Cheshunt in the Ryman Division One North action on Tuesday (7.45pm).
