Carrington qualifies for World Championships

Mildenhall Cycling Club’s Richard Carrington has qualified for the Amateur Road World Championships after a strong finish in the Tour of Cambridgeshire.

Despite a scare in the early stages where Carrington narrowly avoided a large crash, he finished in a time of three hours and 22 minutes to end up 232nd out of 4,787 finishers.

Carrington’s time placed him inside the top 25 per cent of riders in his age group, with 41st place securing the Mildenhall cyclist a place in the World Championships in Denmark later this year.

“I inspected the rear wheel of my machine to check the tyre following an emergency stop to avoid the crash,” he said.

Mildenhall cyclists Paul Pearson, Marc Bowers, Jamie French and Paul Flack all participated in the 82-mile race, with Bowers finishing in a credible time of 3.59.

The previous day Carrington participated in the time trial, and came 38th in the 40-44 Masters age group with a time of 41 minutes and 45 seconds.

Elsewhere, the latest rounds of the club’s Off-Road Championship saw the Mantle family come close to a clean sweep in the Uphill/Downhill sections in Mildenhall Woods.

In the uphill section, Colin Mantle won in the under-18 category with a time of three minutes and 43 seconds, with dad Matthew (2.35) taking first spot in the over-18s.

Judith Robb (3.27) edged Diane Mantle in the ladies category, before Diane (2.18) won in the downhill section.

Colin (2.15) was victorious in the under-18s downhill category, while Matthew was beaten by Pete Clements (1.52) in the over-18s.
