Bury-born racer Matt Carberry conceded he “did not expect” European glory at the weekend – in his first race for six months in a brand new car.

The third Superstox European Championship for the 35-year-old was a remarkable result, in his first race since crashing out of the World Finals in October, writing his car off in the process, as he only picked up his new model hours earlier on raceday.

Carberry, a lorry driver at Stanton-based haulage firm B J and C Carberry Haulage, admitted although he was confident, he did not expect such a result at the Foxhall Stadium in Ipswich on Saturday.

“Foxhall is probably my favourite track so I am always confident there and I am not scared of it,” said Carberry, who has also won the 2009 and 2013 editions of the prestigious event.

“I was confident that I would be up somewhere near the front but I was not expecting to win because there are quite a few good other drivers in it.

“It was a bit weird, as I have not raced for six months since writing my car off in the World Finals in October.

“But the new car felt good right from the word go.”

A previous winner of British, Southern and East Anglian Championships since taking up the sport in 2001, Carberry had picked up his new Elite vehicle on the morning of the race from Chertsey, London.

A quick stop at Arena Essex Raceway, in Purfleet, allowed him to have 25 to 30 laps of testing, before heading to Suffolk for the event.

Next in Carberry’s sights is the English Championships, set for August 31 at the Arlington Stadium, Eastbourne, and the World Championships in Aghadowey and Tullyroan, Northern Ireland, on September 26 and 27.

n Meanwhile, Steven Jackson, of Harleston, near Diss, crashed out while moving up the field.
