Bury skipper: ‘Team spirit there for all to see’

CAPTAIN: Bury's Bradley Barber

Captain Bradley Barber has insisted Bury Town’s team spirit was never negatively impacted by their recent losing run, writes Liam Apicella.

For a long while, it appeared that Ben Chenery’s men were certainties to nab themselves one of the four Ryman League Division One North play-off places.

But six losses from January 7 through to February 18 sent the Blues spiralling towards mid-table, realistically ending their chances of a top-five finish.

However, Saturday’s win over former table-topping Maldon & Tiptree has lifted hope of a late surge and, as far as Barber is concerned, also highlights the togetherness that exists within the camp.

“Being a young team, once you lose one or two, it is easy for that to extend very quickly. Winning is a habit and so is losing,” said the skipper.

“Ben has never lost the changing room. We are right behind him and he is right behind us.

“That is the biggest positive because we have all stuck together.

“It shows in this win over Maldon. They are a good side and we would not beat them if there was no team spirit.”

He added: “We are a young team. In two or three years time, if we can keep the core of these players together, we are going to be a real threat, and not just this league, the league above as well.”

Eleventh-placed Bury, who are 11 points adrift of the play-offs, travel to seventh-placed Haringey Borough tomorrow (3pm).

In the reverse fixture in November, Bury ran out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Luke Read and James Mayhew.
