Bury Saints dealt a tough opener for 2017 season
The Bury Saints will begin their first season in the BAFANL Premiership South with a trip to the London Warriors on April 16.
The Saints start their campaign against the Warriors, who have been to six consecutive Premiership National Championship Britbowl games, winning the last four.
The Saints will once again use Thetford Rugby Club as their base this year and will entertain the London Blitz for their first home game of the season on May 7.
Bury’s coaching staff have been busy since the end of last season, recruiting and solidifying areas that were needed to compete at the top tier of American Football in the UK.
The Saints have retained 38 starters or main contributors from last season, while gaining 42 players through transfers, with two of those coming from the club’s youth team.
The coaching staff has also swelled from eight at the start of last season to 11, with the team having been busy preparing for the new season since January 8.
Head coach Christian Cantrill said: “Although we have been on a great run over the past two years, we certainly face an amazingly tough journey this year in the Premiership.
“We know that at this level you can’t make mistakes and have to play to perfection. We absolutely know this first game is going to be the most difficult in our club’s history and we are preparing the best we can in training to be ready.
“You simply can’t duplicate the London Warriors who have sent players to the professional ranks and to US University football programs. but we have and continue to put in the work to come close. April 16th will be a real test of our program.”
