The St Edmund Pacers’ five-mile race was a competitive affair this year, as just two seconds separated gold and silver.

The event, held in and around Nowton Park, was the fourth in the 2017 Friday 5 series.

It was won by Tom Adams of Ipswich Harriers in a time of 26 minutes and 54 seconds, holding off the challenge of Haverhill Running Club’s Michael Gilbert.

Newmarket Jogger Denys Olefir took third place in 27.54.

The first Pacer home, and with a top-ten finish, was Tom Kingsnorth in 29.03.

Joe Robson finished 15th overall to keep up his chances of taking the top spot in the male Under-20 section of the series, but he will need to maintain his strong form in the final event at Great Bentley in early July.

The first finisher from a strong field of female runners, and 16th overall in 29.31, was Pacer Odette Robson.

It was her fourth win from four in her age-group (FV45) and follows the first place she enjoyed at Framlingham, the venue for the previous fixture in the series.

And Pacer Zohra Armitage also won in the FV40 category, in a time of 33.44 as did Jenny Morgan in the FV60 category in 38.16.

Pacer Howard Beasley also added an age group series win to his belt in the MV55 category.

It was a sellout field from clubs across the county, with runners treated to near perfect conditions and a well-organised team of volunteers from St Edmund Pacers and the Bury St Edmunds Girl Guides.
