Bury come out on top of a five goal thriller in exciting victory
ENGLAND MEN’S HOCKEY
DIVISION TWO NORTH EAST Bury St Edmunds 3
City of Peterborough 2
Bury St Edmunds men’s first team came out on the right end of a five-goal thriller with City Of Peterborough as they secured a 3-2 victory.
After a late start, both teams struggled to keep the ball in the middle of the pitch, with lots of turnovers.
Kieran Devlin finally found a breakthrough as he slotted home to give Bury the lead. However, Peterborough got a short corner not long after and a bullet shot in the bottom corner levelled the game before half time.
The second half improved with Bury looking the more likely to score, which they did after a fast break down the left and pinpoint cross from Tom Chapple found Owen Grisby to tap home.
However, a poor aerial ball from the Bury captain Zak Grayling led to him having to give a penalty flick to stop the Peterborough centre forward from scoring.
The flick was converted with 10 minutes to go, but a second goal from Devlin gave Bury a deserved win.
n Bury St Edmunds Men’s II found their goal-scoring touch as they romped to an emphatic 8-1 win over Pelicans in Division Four North East.
Bury fell behind but responded superbly with goals from Paul Whiting (2), Steve Tassell, Will Baines, Dom Corbett, Phil Vernon and Richard Peck completing the rout.
n Bury St Edmunds Men’s III also enjoyed that winning feeling after overcoming neighbours Sudbury in a 3-1 success in Division Five North East. Goals came courtesy of Tim Thompson, Michael Thompson and Ethan Lubbock.
n There was less joy for Bury St Edmunds Men’s IV as they fell to a 3-1 defeat against Thetford in Division Seven North East.
Bury have been in a run of poor form and they were unable to halt that as Thetford eased to victory. Sean Milbank scored Bury’s consolation.
n Another team who found their scoring touch was Bury St Edmunds Men’s V who hit Norwich City for seven without reply courtesy of goals from Rush (3), Dykes (2), Hollingsworth and Chiang, but it was a less successful weekend for Bury St Edmunds Men’s VI who suffered a 4-2 defeat against UEA. Robert Fiske scored both the Bury goals.
n Bury St Edmunds Ladies first team came out on top of a six-goal thriller with Framlingham as they secured a 4-2 win.
After falling behind in the opening minutes Maz Chapman levelled before further goals from Sinead Collins (2) and Jo Chapman completed the turnaround.
n Elsewhere, there was less joy for Bury St Edmunds Ladies II who lost 2-0 to IES.
