Air cadets from 301 (Bury St Edmunds) Squadron booked their place in the regional finals after being crowned athletics champions at Ipswich Athletics Stadium.

Bury picked up both the girls’ and boys’ accolades on their way to collecting the Charlesworth Bowl for the champion squadron.

Twenty-seven teams, consisting of 300 cadets aged between 12 and 19 from across Norfolk and Suffolk, did battle on a wet weather day of track and field events.

Thetford cadet Mantvydas Senkus, 14, was the overall Boys Champion — gaining two new wing records in the shot and discus in the under-15 age group.

Wing sports officer, squadron leader Jason Allen said: “My thanks go to all of the cadets for taking part in what were really difficult conditions.

“All did so without quibble or complaint and all I saw was smiling faces all day.”

He added: “We had great support from our volunteer staff and without them these events just would not happen.

“Everyone did a great job on a very dreary day.”

All of the winners will now represent Norfolk and Suffolk at the regional event, which will be held in Bedford.
