Bury boss aims to get perfect mix of experience and youth
Bury Town manager Ben Chenery is searching for the right balance of experience and youth while assembling his squad this summer.
The Blues completed their second signing of the summer at the weekend, with 28-year-old midfielder Bradley Barber agreeing a deal with the club.
And it is Barber’s experience at Ryman League Division One North level with former club Needham Market which attracted the Bury boss, who has also signed Ollie Hughes ahead of next season.
“Bury’s situation has been well documented and it’s important we get the balance right with experience and youth.
“We need some calming heads on the pitch, but the experienced players need that exciting youth (around them).
“Bradley is someone who I have admired for some time. He’s stood out when I’ve watched him play.
“He’s got a good attitude and after several conversations with him he said he wanted to come to Bury.”
Barber spent three years at Needham before dropping down a division to play for Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division side Felixstowe and Walton United in 2013.
The central midfielder has been a near ever-present for the Seasiders over the last two seasons, clocking up over 90 appearances to help them achieve consecutive top five finishes in the Premier Division for the first time.
Bury are preparing for their first season in Division One North for eight years following relegation last term, but Chenery believes the Blues have a lot to offer for any player looking for a new club this summer.
“Me and Christian (Appleford, assistant manager) are meticulous in our planning and how we run training,” the Bury boss said.
“We treat players the right way and we want to build something at Bury.
“There’s lots of things happening with players talking to other clubs. We are constantly working to bring players in.
“Those players have got to want to play for Bury for the right reasons and show great pride.
“We want to bring in local people who are good enough to put on the Bury shirt.”
n Bury have announced their programme of pre-season friendlies ahead of the 2015-16 campaign.
