BREAKING NEWS: Stowmarket’s Katherine Rednall wins World Mixed Pairs title
Stowmarket’s Katherine Rednall and her pairs partner Darren Burnett have won the Mixed Pairs title at the Just Retirement World Indoor Bowls Championships.
The 20-year-old, alongside Burnett, defeated the Scottish duo of Alex Marshall and Julie Forrest 11-5, 14-9 in the final at Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton-on-Sea.
Rednall, a former Stowmarket High School student, lifted the Women’s Singles title back in 2014, and has now added to her collection of world titles with the Mixed Pairs trophy this afternoon.
After beating David Gourlay and Janice Gower 11-8, 10-3 in the quarter-finals, Rednall and Burnett then saw off Paul Foster and Rebecca Field 7-4, 10-2 to reach the final.
Another straight sets victory in the final handed them the trophy, and for Burnett has kept his hopes of completing a hat-trick of titles this year alive, after he won the Open Pairs with Stewart Anderson yesterday.
“It’s fantastic,” Rednall told the BBC after winning the final. “The Mixed Pairs is one of the most enjoyable events to me in the last few years and I’ve just looked forward to it.
“I lost the weight a little bit in the start of the second set but Darren definitely made up for it, he bowled some cracking bowls to keep us in it.
“I think we’ve played really solid together right throughout the tournament, so it’s just been brilliant.”
