Blues halt losing run but remain bottom
Bury Town halted a run a seven straight league defeats but remain bottom of the Ryman League Premier Division table following a 1-1 draw with relegation rivals VCD Athletic.
Facing the side directly above them in the table, the Blues were forced to come from behind to secure a share of the spoils as Joe Benjamin struck in the 69th minute to cancel out Nick Reeves 55th minute opener.
The result leaves ben Chenery’s side five points adrift of Athletic and eight away from safety ahead of the festive period.
In contrast, Needham Market remain top of Ryman League Division One North after a Michael Brothers brace ensured a 2-0 success over Wroxham to leave them three points clear of nearest rivals Harlow Town.
In the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division, Mildenhall Town secured a morale boosting 2-0 success away at reigning champions Hadleigh United while Thetford Town were forced to settle for a share of the spoils with Gorleston following a 1-1 draw.
Meanwhile, in the rugby, Bury St Edmunds saw their National League Three London and South East title ambitions dented following a narrow 31-30 defeat away at Hertford.
The result leaves Gavin Hogg’s side five points adrift of leaders London Irish Wild Geese.
In the Sky Bet Championship, a last minute Steven Whittaker strike saw Norwich City snatch a share of the spoils away at promotion chasing Derby County.
Johnny Russell had given the Rams the lead in the 43rd minute before Cameron Jerome levelled eight minutes later.
Chris Martin put the home side back ahead from the spot after 55 minutes but they were denied victory as Whittaker struck late to seal a point for the Canaries.
Meanwhile rivals Ipswich Town moved to within a point of league leaders Bournemouth following a 2-0 success over Middlesborough.
Darryl Murphy opened the scoring in the 25th minute before Jay Tabb doubled the advantage 20 minutes later to lift the Tractor Boys to second in the table.
