Basketball duo fly the flag for East

Two players from the Bury-based County Upper Basketball Academy flew the flag for the Eastern region at a national event in Sheffield.

Lewis French, 10, and Grace Spooner, 11, helped their respective teams reach the final, competing against other regional squads from across the country.

French, who attends Westley Middle School, was part of the boy’s East team which beat Yorkshire 52-33, South West 71-30 and West Midlands 52-24 before a 39-19 success over the South in the last four.

In the final, the boy’s maintained their unbeaten streak with a 48-22 victory over London.

Year 5 pupil French played extremely well and he is tipped to be a real talent in next year’s tournament with him still being young enough to play in the same event.

The girls’ East team also remained unbeaten throughout the group stages.

Spooner was part of the side which defeated Yorkshire 30-13, West Midlands 42-5 and the South 47-9 before a 48-22 win over London in the semi-finals.

But in the final they suffered an agonising one-point defeat to the South East in a 26-25 reverse.
