Bacton boss delighted with cup success

HAPPY DAYS: Bacton boss Ryan Owens
HAPPY DAYS: Bacton boss Ryan Owens

Manager Ryan Owens said he was ‘gobsmacked’ after seeing his Bacton United 89 side win this season’s Suffolk FA Junior Cup.

The Touchline SIL Division One side defeated Oulton Broad from Lowestoft & District League Division One 3-2 after extra time in Tuesday evening’s final at Colchester United FC.

Owens said: “The game was a whirlwind of emotions. We thought we had won it and then had to win it again – I don’t think our victory has sunk in yet.

“What an amazing night for the players; Warren Taylor-Holt scored the winner in the Senior Cup for Stowmarket and now he has done the same for us in the Junior Cup.

“I thought our goalkeeper (Jason Hindley) was unbelievable, but there were good performances from my players all over the park.

“I am gobsmacked at the moment, but it is all about winning the final – I can sit back and let it sink in tomorrow.

Owens also praised Colchester United, who are in the middle of staging seven Suffolk FA county cup finals at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

He said: “It has been an amazing experience for the players to play on this pitch with these facilities. The only loser in this is Ipswich Town and Portman Road.

“If it was up to me I would have the final here every year as we have been so well looked after.”

Oulton Broad join-manager Adam Boggis was very gracious after seeing his side fail to register a third victory in this competition in the last five years.

He said: “I am very disappointed. Obviously going 2-0 down killed us as we were then always trying to get back in to the game by pushing players on and we lacked shape because of that.

“Credit to Bacton who are a good side, well drilled with a 3-5-2 formation. They have experienced players who have been together for a period of time.

“They deserved it over the 120 minutes. For us to take them to extra time with the players we have out and the problems we have had with injuries is a credit to our team.”
