THE hunt for a group to run a new youth club in Thetford has seen an ‘overwhelming’ response.

Thetford Town Council’s request for local businesses, charities and social enterprises to run a weekly youth club has received so many offers of help that it has extended the submissions deadline to October 31.

The youth club was proposed at a meeting of the town council on September 27, with groups initially being given till October 10 to make their case.

It would run at the Carnegie Room one night a week, beginning with an initial trial period from November 1 up to the end of March 2012, after which the council’s Amenities Committee would review its position.

The council has agreed to contribute up to £1,000 for necessary equipment.

It is hoping that further funding can be accessed and that the youth club’s members will be able to assist with fund-raising and applying for grants.

The proposal to create a youth club was made at the September 27 meeting by Cllr Terry Jermy, who said it was needed to tackle a shortage of activities for young people in Thetford.

Group interested in running the group should send their proposals to Susan Glossop, town centre manager, Thetford Town Council, Kings House, Kings Street, Thetford, Norfolk IP24 2AP or email
