Everyone in and around Bury St Edmunds was shocked by the loss of Cupola House to fire last week. On behalf of St Edmundsbury Borough Council and the town however, I would like to thank the Fire Service, police, engineers and many, many, others for their superb efforts which both limited the loss and helped keep Bury open for business. The fire was of course a tragedy but, without the fantastic contributions of so many individuals working together, it could have been a great deal worse.
We are making every effort, with Bid4Bury, to manage the immediate economic impact, to ensure the Traverse remains a popular shopping destination and to help displaced residents back into their homes. Meanwhile, our conservation team is working with English Heritage and the engineers to salvage material from this unique Grade I listed building. I would like to reassure residents that the borough council will press for the swiftest and maximum possible re-instatement of the building to its former glory.
Updated information will be posted on site and on the council website – stedmundsbury.gov.uk – and anyone interested in receiving updates by email can subscribe from the site or email firstname.lastname@example.org
With many thanks again to everyone involved,
Leader, St Edmundsbury Borough Council.
