An elderly woman caused chaos on the A14 yesterday by driving for several miles on the wrong side of the road.

She was seen driving east on the westbound carriageway at lunchtime in the outside lane at speed as other drivers sounded their horns and flashed their lights.

As Cambridgeshire police operated a rolling road block to try to prevent a collision, they contacted Suffolk Police to warn she was heading towards the county border in case Suffolk had patrols in place that could assist.

A Cambridgeshire police spokesman said: “Officers attended and carried out a rolling roadblock to prevent a collision and safely stopped the vehicle in Cambridgeshire about a mile before J37 [at Newmarket].

“The driver was taken home. Her car has been seized.”

It is thought she had mental health problems.
