Priory School and West Suffolk College are coming together as lead sponsors for a new Academy Trust, which will enhance the provision of outstanding Special Education Needs education for the region.

It will be known as SENDAT (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Academy Trust) and is a unique Multi Academy Trust focusing on special schools and specialist provision in Suffolk.

It will enable the development of a range of provisions and the delivery of high standards and performance which will improve the life chances of children and young people with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities).

Lawrence Chapman, headteacher of Priory School, said: “As an outstanding special school and academy, we believe that high quality education is best achieved when the needs of each individual pupil – social, emotional, spiritual and educational - are considered to be paramount.

“The formation of this trust allows us to work with partners to provide the best academic and vocational educational opportunities to all our students. We are excited and proud to be working with West Suffolk College to provide a coherent and outstanding approach to Special Education across Suffolk.”

Dr Nikos Savvas, principal of West Suffolk College, said, “Our vision is to develop a continuum of specialist provision to enable the trust to fully support students, and parents, with complex Special Education Needs and Disabilities.

“West Suffolk College and Priory School share a mission and a passion to focus on all our students as individuals, and develop challenging and enjoyable educational programmes to directly meet their needs and to truly personalise learning.

“Our students and their success are the heart of everything we do and the formation of this trust underpins this. We are proud to be working with Lawrence and his outstanding team for the benefit of this community.”

The application to become joint sponsors was approved before Easter and is effective immediately.
