Independents' Week celebrations start in Bury St Edmunds on Monday

A week-long celebration of independent businesses in Bury St Edmunds starts on Monday.

The annual Our Bury St Edmunds Independents’ Week kicks off on Monday, with activities planned to tie in with the national Independents’ Day itself – and American Independence Day – on Wednesday.

It is a double celebration for Gavin Ashley Hairdressing, in Churchgate Street, which is celebrating its 40th birthday on Independents’ Day, having opened on July 4, 1978.

Owner Gavin Downes said: “I was born and bred in Suffolk and in the 40 years I’ve been running the business I’ve always been keen to give something back, too.

"Whether that’s supporting initiatives such as Bury in Bloom, judging college hairdressing competitions or raising money for a local cause, it’s all part of feeling really involved with the town that has given me this long and successful career.”

Mike Kirkham, Our Bury St Edmunds marketing and business support officer, said: “With nearly 300 independent businesses in the town centre we have a lot to look forward to.”

On Wednesday, a town crier and the mayor will be visiting several businesses.

The is the eighth year Our Bury St Edmunds has organised the Independents’ Week campaign, which runs until July 8.
