Huge crowds lined the banks of Needham Lake on Sunday for the 15th annual Needham Market Raft Race.

A fleet of wacky rafts took to the waters as around 1,800 people cheered them on from the waters edge.

Event organiser Debbie Cadman said although they weren’t blessed with the weather, this year’s event was one of the best they’ve put on.

“It was excellent”, she said. “It was a really great day.

“Even though the weather wasn’t sunny the good news is that it didn’t pour. We had a showering for ten minutes or so but people just stood under trees or got their brollies out.”

This year’s event was themed around ‘Movie Madness’. Race regulars Four Non Blondes won the coveted fancy dress prize with their Ghostbusters outfits and later won the Tracey Cadman Cup for the fastest race lap

The Codfather team were crowned overall raft race winners while Incendia Network won the brand new ‘Tickle Factor’ trophy for making the crowds laugh.

Debbie said around 1,800 people turned up to watch the race.

She said: “There was a lot more crowd participation this year too. That’s really good and just what we want. It was one of the best races we have ever put on.”
